Real Time

Andrea and Daniel continue bringing movement-based performance in this month's Real Time as they welcome Christopher Elst and his amazing talents at stage combat and fight directing.

Christopher and Andrea are teaching their expertise to each other and choreographing all month leading up to Real Time to offer two pieces- an trapeze partnering duet, and stage combat duet.   Daniel, who will not be privy to either of these duets, will offer an improvised performance based on what he sees the night of the show. And, of course, you can expect a duet from Andrea and Daniel, this one exploring the inherent tension in contact improvisation and in aerial partnering.

As always, tickets are pay what you will, cash only beginning half an hour before the show. You value live arts, we value you. And drinks and conversation are shared afterwards.

Real Time

Andrea and Daniel Burkholder, bring their First Friday dance event, Real Time  back to Danceworks (1661 N Water St, Milwaukee) on October 7 at 8:30 pm.

This month’s installation incorporates video and real time performance simultaneously occurring as well as the evolution of a duet performed numerous times, demonstrating the intricacies of relationship and community.

October’s Real Time performance will draw inspiration from the summer events at Alfons Gallery and at a block party celebrating the groundbreaking of Za’Layia’s Legacy Garden. Andrea and Daniel will use video projection from their event with Eddee Daniel’s Memorial and Promise: Life on the Kinnickinnic and reimagine their relationship to the photographs while in a theater setting. They will also perform their hand-holding duet “Grasp” from Za’Layia’s garden at various time throughout the evening, each iteration reflecting on a changing relationship. To round out the evening, Andrea will also perform her aerial solo, “The Distance Between”.

As always, tickets are pay-what-you-will, with you putting the value on the art you are coming to see, and drinks are offered gratis afterwards, as we look forward to having you stay and talking with you.

Real Time: Za'Layia's Garden

Join Andrea and Daniel and the Danceworks Youth Performance Company on August 13 as they plant and perform to help build a beautiful garden and a stronger community in Milwaukee neighborhood. As always, Real Time is pay what you will, but please be generous, as all proceeds go directly to the garden effort. In lieu of money, you can also bring perennials, mulch, stones, rain barrels, or anything else to build and maintain this peace garden. The garden work and block party starts at 12pm, with the performance ending the day at 5pm. We encourage to come help out, let the kids play in the bounce house, enjoy some barbecue and meet some fellow Milwaukeeans.

On May 5, 2016, Za'Layia Boone was shot while inside her family's home. On May 16, one day before her 10th birthday, she took her last breath. Now, her mother and aunt have taken their  enormous grief and are building a garden to grow to honor Za'Layia and other children who can no longer grow with us. Real Time: Alfons Gallery

Andrea and Daniel offer you an installation performance in conjunction with Eddee Daniel's photographic exhibit "Concrete River: memorial and Promise on the Kinnickinnic."

Drawing inspiration from Eddee Daniel’s photography as well as Melanie Ariens' environmental sculptural art,  Andrea and Daniel explore the inherent tension within the exhibit’s photographs of “urban wilderness” by engaging in their subject matter, the beauty of form found in them, as well as the absurdity. Creating a 30-minute, installation style performance which will repeat, non-stop, three times, the audience is invited to enter and exit the event at their pleasure or whim.

Integrated throughout the performance will be opportunities for the audience to discuss with the performers, Andrea and Daniel Burkholder, as well as photographer Eddee Daniel about the art work, the performance, and ecological issues. The photo above is by Eddee Daniel, taken at his exhibit.

Bayou's State

Bayou’s State, an original aerial dance/theater piece reflecting on Louisiana’s coastal land- loss as it relates to the local culture and environment, makes its Milwaukee debut April 16 and 17. Andrea explores her Cajun heritage as she travels through the declining Louisiana coastline, and it’s swamps and marshlands via an aerial net, bungee cords, and trapeze.

Surrounded by the development off the Milwaukee River, Andrea begins the evening with she and her Cajun father cooking and serving everyone a traditional Southern Louisiana dinner of homemade gumbo, red beans and rice, greens, and cornbread. Fresh seasonal ingredients are provided by local farmers. Throughout the room where dinner is held will be photographs by Eddee Daniel of the Kinnickinnic River, one of the top 10 most endangered rivers in the nation.

The dinner will be followed by a 50 minute performance event which will include aerial work, dance, theater, more of Eddee Daniel's images, and personal story. Inspired by her own travels and readings, including Mike Tidwell’s book, “Bayou Farewell: the Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana’s Cajun Coast”, Andrea navigates the issues of rising coastal waters, disappearing marshland and barrier islands, increasing water salinity, decreasing water quality, and resulting cultural shifts.

After the performance, the audience and performer stay in each other's company, with light dessert and coffee and time to talk with Andrea and Eddee about their research, artistic processes, and local water issues affecting us.

Ticket price :$40 Includes dinner and wine, performance, dessert and post performance discussion. Tickets must be purchased in advance (so we make enough food for everyone!)

Tickets may be purchased through Danceworks' box office.

Bayou's State sneak peek

Andrea brings her one woman show exploring Louisiana's receding coastline and the resulting environmental and cultural repercussions to Danceworks this Spring. On April 2, Andrea offers a sneak peek into her inspirations and process to create the work. In an informal setting she'll share excerpts of readings, thoughts and images she had, and show you how some of these ideas translated into her choreography. A great primer before the April 16/17 show if you tend to like more information about the art you see, but also a wonderful way to get to know Andrea and her process just on its own. a woman's Place

Cooperative Performance Milwaukee in collaboration with Danceworks present

"a woman's Place"
A dark story about five women placed in an insane asylum and their journey to break free from the constraints of an institutionalized society. Inspired by Wisconsin's first mental asylum, founded in 1860, this devised piece uses movement, text, and aerial work to weave a tale about a time when women were institutionalized for behaving in ways unacceptable to a male-dominated society. Devised by Kelly Coffey, co-directed by Don Russell and Kelly Coffey, aerial choreography by Andrea Burkholder featuring guest artists from Danceworks Performance Company, with original music by NINETEEN THIRTEEN.
